Why Our Recipe
- Soft and fluffy rolls infused with fresh orange flavor in every layer for the ultimate citrus sweet roll.
- Includes a luscious cream cheese glaze with a little orange extract for even more orange flavor.
- Breakfast, brunch, dessert? These will be a hit for any occasion!
This recipe is based on our famous homemade cinnamon roll recipe which has been tried and true by hundreds of thousands of people over a decade. They stay soft and fresh for up to five days, so you can enjoy them all week long, but don’t be surprised if you never get the chance to test that statement. They always get eaten before that!
Ingredient Notes
- Warm Milk (100-110ยฐF): Aim for a warm, bathwater-like feel. Whole or 2% milk works best, though milk alternatives can also work in a pinch. Use a thermometer if unsure.
- Orange Juice: Bottled orange juice works just fine, or you can go with freshly squeezed since you already need a fresh orange for orange zest.
- Instant Dry Yeast: No need to activate this yeast beforehand. If using active dry yeast, allow an extra 10โ15 minutes of rising time.
- Salted Butter: If using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt. Ensure itโs softened and spreadable for easy mixing.
- All-Purpose Flour: Bread flour can be substituted if desired for a slightly chewier texture. Add flour gradually until the dough is soft and pulls away from the bowl.
- Orange Zest: Fresh orange zest is essential for that bold citrus flavor in the filling.
- Cream Cheese: Soften cream cheese to ensure a lump-free glaze. Full-fat cream cheese gives the richest flavor.
- Powdered Sugar: Sifted powdered sugar blends easily into the glaze for a smooth finish.
- Orange Extract: A concentrated way to amp up the orange flavor in the glaze. Skip it if you prefer a more natural taste, but we highly recommend the extra.
Feel of the Dough
The amount of flour you use when making bread doughs can vary so it is best to go by how the dough feels. The dough should be slightly sticky, but still very soft and pliable. It should just barely not be sticking to the bowl. If you add too much flour and the dough stiffens, your rolls will also get a little stiff. You can feel a soft roll just by touching the dough. Start with less flour, as you can always add more as necessary.
Butter Tip
The butter should be room temperature and smoosh easily to the touch. If you soften the butter in a microwave, be sure to work in small increments of time so you donโt get any melted pools of butter.
No Stand Mixer? No Problem!
You can knead the dough by hand! Start out by stirring with a spoon until you canโt do it anymore. Then knead by hand. Just keep on kneading until all the flour is incorporated and/or the dough is soft to the touch and only slightly sticky. Itโs a bit of a workout, but itโs worth it!
Make Ahead Instructions
OVERNIGHT INSTRUCTIONS: After youโve rolled and cut your orange rolls and placed them into your lightly greased baking pan, cover with plastic wrap and place in your refrigerator. The next day, remove them from the fridge and allow them to come to room temperature (about 45 minutes to an hour depending on the temperature of your house) before baking.
FREEZER INSTRUCTIONS: Roll and cut your cinnamon rolls and place them several inches apart on a baking sheet to freeze rolls individually. Once frozen, transfer to a resealable plastic freezer bag. When ready to bake, place in a lightly greased baking dish and allow to come to room temperature before baking.
Storage and Reheating Instructions
Store at room temperature in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Just keep in mind that refrigeration can sometimes dry them out, so warming them up before eating will help bring back their soft texture.
Reheat individual rolls in the microwave for 15-20 seconds, or warm them in a 350ยฐF oven for about 5-7 minutes until heated through.

I just made these and HOLY COW. So perfectly tender and almost flaky. Delicious and moist. Truly the best orange rolls Iโve ever made. 10000/10
I loveeeee this recipe. I always have tons of requests for me to bake them during the holiday season! However, Iโm having trouble with my filling seeping out during baking. When I pull them from the oven, they are in a bubbling pool of butter! Any suggestions?
That’s one of the best parts! But if that’s not your preference, there’s a few tricks people use.
The first is to make sure that your rolls are tight together in the pan before baking so using a 9×13 and then making sure they have a maximum rise.
The second is that once they are fully risen, you pop them in the fridge to harden the butter before baking.
The last is to add starch to the filling through a little cornstarch or xantham gum (mixed in with the sugar). I’ve also heard that you can skip butter in the filling altogether and use instant clear gel which is normally used in canning recipes. You mix about 2 tablespoons with the sugar and orange zest and spread that on. I haven’t tried that one myself.
Hope that helps!
Iโve made this so many times now, and it is so light, buttery, and full of orange flavor with perfect cream cheese frosting that it blows away all others Iโve ever had. We just went to a local diner famous for its orange rolls. If I hadnโt had these homemade beauties so many times, I might have thought the dinerโs version was pretty good. As it was, the dinerโs version tasted like baked dough balls with an overly sugary and buttery glaze and only a hint of orange. These rolls, instead are so much brighter, butterier, lighter, and gooey. Thank you for this recipe! Itโs a family favorite. I made a double batch and gave half to my friendโs family. They said we could make orange rolls for them any time if they are this good!
Made today for the first time. Scrumptious! Doubled the recipe, made 36. Had lots of leftover glaze, will not double it next time. Enjoy fresh from the oven for a bit of heaven. ๐
Hi! I made these rolls last year and they were a hit. This year, I’m doing two batches! If you’re wanting to freeze and then bake later, should you allow the rolls their second rise before or after freezing? Thank you ๐
You want them to have their second rise after freezing so that they rise as they thaw.
These were delicious. T,he dough was so easy to work with. If I wanted to use this dough for regular cinnamon rolls what liquid would I substitute for the orange juice?
I’m so glad you liked them! This recipe is actually a variation of our regular cinnamon roll recipe which you can find here: https://thestayathomechef.com/best-homemade-cinnamon-rolls-ever/
If preparing your orange rolls the evening beforehand, can they stay in the fridge longer than 24 hours? As an example, I made the rolls and placed them in the fridge late Thursday night. Would they keep in the fridge until Saturday morning, or should they be baked Friday?
Yes you can! They will continue to rise while they are in the fridge, just at a much slower pace.
I just pulled these out of the oven not even 20 minutes ago and I can say hands down these are some of the best orange sweet rolls Iโve ever had! I added some heavy cream to my pan before putting them in the oven and dear lord it turned the sugar into the best orange sticky bun type caramel on the bottom and it was absolutely heavenly !!!
I made these for the first time today. They were great!!! Easy to assemble and deliciousโค๏ธ. I canโt wait to try some of the other roll recipes
I made these for Easter following the recipe as written with slightly less sugar in filling. They were outstanding! Best sweet rolls Iโve ever made. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Made these once in 2020 and they were amazing. Going to make them again for a friend this weekend.
