Yes! Instead of placing the apples into a saucepan on the stove, simply place the apples (along with the water, lemon juice, and cinnamon stick) into either a slow cooker or an Instant Pot. For the slow cooker, cook on high for 3 to 4 hours. For the Instant Pot, you’ll need 10 minutes of high pressure.

Delicious recipe, especially with some additions. I added shredded coconut — and wow! So much better than regular applesauce. It tasted like a gourmet dessert. I added: cinnamon, lemon juice, a dab of butter, vanilla extract, and shredded coconut. No additional sugar – the coconut flakes added a lot of sweetness. I invited two neighbors over and we ate it warm. I used 1/2 of a 5 pound bag of jona gold apples (great choice especially because they didn’t brown when I was peeling and cutting) so halved the recipe. I may also have added a little extra water. I read somewhere to leave the cover on, and take the applesauce off the burner for 15 minutes when done, to let it sit and absorb any additional water, and that made it perfect. I find myself wondering what it would taste like with a little bit of vanilla ice cream…..
I made this today with 2 pink lady apples, scaled the recipe down, and left out the cinnamon stick. To sweeten, I drizzled a little maple syrup in the food processor when I blended the apples. It turned out delicious!
I made this following the recipe and it came out great. I added the optional ingredients to make more of a dessert. I used a pressure cooker and a stick blender. Adding a cinnamon stick gave it a nice flavor and aroma.
I’m surprised no one has suggested cooking the apples in the microwave. I add about a cup of water to the apples, cover the bowl, and in 10-15 minutes (depends on type of apple) I have great sauce.
I have never used a recipe when making apple sauce before. It is so simple. Is one even needed? Well, it has been a few years since the last time I made it so thought I would look it up for a quick review before I started just to make sure I remembered what to do. Intrigued by the addition of butter, I just had to try this. Best, creamiest apple sauce ever. Definitely a step above.
Instead of using water i used apple cider and it was delicious! Thank you
Thanks for the great, simple, flexible and delicious recipe for applesauce. Lockdown in Shanghai with apples that were starting to go when I got them and I couldn’t bear to waste, still turned out to be great applesauce.
How long do you water bath? 15 minutes?
I have been making applesauce for years, my way is my mother’s way, peel, add some previously made applesauce, cook until apples are completely soft, stain threw my old cone shape strainer then add cinnamon, freeze in small plastic containers. Grandson loves grandpa’s applesauce.
I have many of your recipes saved. Btw I’m 87.
Pleasing indeed keep it up
