Classic Beer Battered Fish and Chips are salty, savory, and full of flavor! Serve it up with tartar sauce, fresh squeezed lemon, and malt vinegar for an amazing meal!
Weโre making beer battered fish and chips today, and you know this is going to be delicious. Cod fish is breaded and fried right on the stovetop, while the chips bake in the oven. Even the fish haters wonโt be able to stop themselves from chowing down on this British favorite!
History lesson: It is thought that frying battered fish in oil came from the Western Sephardic Jewish immigrants from Holland. Fish and chips began in the UK in the 1860s. Less than 40 years later, there were more than 25,000 fish and chip shops all around the UK! It was an instant hit, and still is today!
Beer Substitutes:
You really donโt have to use beer. Beef broth and chicken broth would work. But my favorite substitution is soda: Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Coca Cola, and even Root Beer!
Can I use frozen fish for beer battered fish and chips?
You can use frozen fish, but you want to make sure it is completely thawed and excess moisture is blotted dry with a paper towel before cooking.
Fish Options:
Halibut and Cod are the most common fish used in fish and chips. However, you can use practically any white fish!
Storage and Reheating Instructions:
Fish and chips is best eaten fresh. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in an oven preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit until warmed through.

I have made these many times and I am making it again tonight! The easiest way to make really delicious fish and chips! We all love this recipe! Thank you!
We all enjoy store bought French fries tho. I buy the steak fries.
Peace!
Absolutely delicious. Crispy, delicious, flavorful batter. When we ran out of fish my kids requested that I just fry up the remaining batter. This, like every other recipe I’ve tried from this site, will be going into my recipe binder. It’s basically becoming a Stay At Home Chef binder.
There’s always a way to use the extra batter!!!! I cut fresh potatoes into ‘chips’, spritz them with oil & seasonings and air fry them, so I do both fish & chips at the same time. For that extra batter: cut some chicken into bite-sized pieces before you prep the batter – dredge the pieces in the batter – plus any leftover (fresh) broccoli – I throw these into the batter & fry them too!! It all comes out beery & delicious!
I have made fish and chips in the past but they never came out right. I made this recipe and my family flipped out. Absolutely delicious. I will never use another recipe. Thank you so much!
Absolutely fantastic!! So good! My only problem was I didn’t use a nonstick pan to fry the fish and some of the batter fell off but the fish was still amazing!!! Use a NON-STICK pan! This fish is sooooo good!
I made this for my fish -hating husband and he went back for thirds ! I’d never made fish and chips before , and I was nervous. The batter worked like a dream ,and these fish and chips were as good , or better than any I had in the U. K . ! Thanks Rachel !
Fabuloso!!!!
I discovered Stay at Home Chef in March at the beginning of the โshelter in placeโ. Wow!!! I was so impressed!!! Every recipe that I made was absolutely delicious!!! Plus I loved Rachelโs videos. They were so informative!!
So now on to her beer batter. I was a little hesitant in adding cornstarch to the batter but Rachel said that it would add some โcrunchโ to the end result!! WOW!! Was she right!! It truly was the absolute best fried fish I have ever made!! My own personal addition was that I seasoned my fish with Old Bay seasoning. I also added that to my batter!!!
Thank you Rachel!!
Off the Charts. It was amazing. Your recipes are the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These were AMAZING. My husband is from the East Coast and said they were fantastic and the tartar sauce was spot on! So good!
