Ingredient Notes
- Chocolate Rice Krispies Cereal: If you can’t find the chocolate version, you can substitute regular Rice Krispies and add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to add that missing chocolate element. You can always use the off-brand too.
- Salted Butter: Salt is a flavor enhancer and does wonders for chocolate. If you only have unsalted butter on hand, just add a pinch of salt to the melted marshmallow mixture.
- Mini Marshmallows: Using mini marshmallows helps them melt quickly and smoothly. Plus, folding in extra unmelted ones at the end gives you little pockets of marshmallow goodness throughout the treats.
- Mini Chocolate Chips: The smaller size helps them distribute evenly. If you don’t have mini chips, regular chocolate chips will also work.
Drizzle or Dip in Chocolate
If you’re looking to take these Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats to the next level, adding a chocolate drizzle or dipping them in melted chocolate is a fun (and delicious) way to upgrade them. Hereโs how to do it:
Drizzling: Melt 1/2 cup of chocolate chips (milk, dark, or white chocolate all work!) in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20-second increments, stirring in between, until fully melted and smooth. Use a spoon or piping bag to drizzle the chocolate over the cooled treats in zigzag patterns. Let the chocolate set at room temperature or speed things up by popping them in the fridge for about 10 minutes.
Dipping: For even more chocolate, dip the bottom of each treat into melted chocolate. After cutting them into squares, Melt 2 cups of chocolate chips (milk, dark, or white chocolate all work!) in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20-second increments, stirring in between, until fully melted and smooth. Dip each cut square about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way into melted chocolate. Place the dipped squares on a sheet of parchment or wax paper and let the chocolate harden.
Storage Instructions
At Room Temperature: Store your Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Make sure the container is sealed tightly to keep them fresh and chewy.
Freezing: For longer storage, freeze the treats. Cut them into squares and place them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Freeze until solid, then transfer the squares to a resealable plastic freezer bag. Store frozen for up to 3 months. To enjoy, let them thaw at room temperature for about 15-20 minutes.
