Aussie Bites Recipe
Aussie Bites have a chewy and slightly crispy texture, thanks to the combination of oats, quinoa, and dried fruits. They are slightly sweet from the combination of honey, coconut, and apricots. The bites are satisfying and filling, making them a great on-the-go snack option for both adults and children and a great breakfast.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Rolled Oats: Provide a hearty base and fiber. Quick oats can be used in a pinch, though the texture will differ slightly. Use certified gluten-free oats if needed.
- Dried Apricots and Raisins: Offer natural sweetness and chewiness. Feel free to substitute with any dried fruit like cranberries or dates, but don’t simply omit.
- Seeds and Nuts: Flaxseed, sunflower seeds, and chia seeds add crunch and nutritional value. Swap out or add any seeds or nuts you prefer.
- Canola Oil: Chosen for its mild flavor and versatility in the original store-bought Aussie bites. For substitutions, melted coconut oil, melted butter, vegetable oil, or avocado oil can be used
- Quinoa: Adds a unique texture and protein. Both cooked and uncooked quinoa work, with cooked quinoa giving a softer texture.
- Honey and Vanilla Extract: Sweeten the bites naturally and add flavor depth. Maple syrup can be used as a plant-based alternative to honey.
Can I make Aussie Bites Without a Food Processor?
If you don’t have a food processor, you can mix the dry ingredients by hand and finely chop the dried fruits and nuts. The texture will be chunkier but just as delicious.
Muffin Pan Options
Mini Muffin Pans:
- Ideal Size: Perfect for authentic, bite-sized treats.
- Fill Level: Fill cups nearly to the top, as they donโt rise much.
- Baking Time: Typically 10-12 minutes, until golden brown.
Standard Muffin Pans:
- Larger Treats: Results in bigger Aussie bites, great for a snack or breakfast.
- Fill Level: Fill each cup about halfway to ensure even baking.
- Baking Time: Around 12-15 minutes, may need a bit longer due to size. Use golden brown color and clean toothpick test as doneness indicators.
General Tips:
- Non-stick Pans: Grease well if pans arenโt non-stick to prevent sticking.
- Cooling: Let bites cool in the pan before moving to a wire rack to help them set.
- Freezing: Both sizes freeze well. Freeze individually on a baking sheet before transferring to a freezer-safe container.
Troubleshooting
- If your bites are too crumbly, add a bit more melted butter or honey to the mixture.
- For bites that are too moist, add a small amount of additional oat flour or rolled oats.
Tips From the Chef
- Pulse the ingredients in the food processor until just combined to keep some texture.
- Allow the bites to cool completely in the pan to set properly before removing.
When are Aussie Bites Ready?
- Color: Look for a golden brown hue on the edges and top.
- Texture: The outside should be slightly crisp, while the inside remains soft.
- Firmness: They should hold together well but still have a slight give when pressed.
Storage Instructions
Store Aussie bites in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For longer storage, freeze them on a baking sheet before transferring to a freezer bag or container; they can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or gently warm in the microwave for a few seconds before enjoying.

Great recipe and not all that difficult. Just cooking the quinoa in advance and a lot of good ingredients to measure out. Once that’s done, it goes very quickly. Mine turned out very crumbly, so next time, I will add more oil and/or honey. I added fresh ground ginger to half of the batch and they taste even better than the regular ones!
THANK YOU!!! I love Aussie Bites, and used to buy them from Shaw’s until three months ago when one doctor told me to stop eating nuts and seeds. Found another doctor, he said that’s nonsense, so my first stop was Shaw’s to get some Aussie Bites — and not only were there none, the ladies at the bakery insisted they had never sold any such product. It was maddening! I bought a lot of them right there! So, I’m a terrible cook, but I’m going to be stocking up on THESE supplies and making Aussie Bites as soon as I can.
Still trying to find out what “Aussie Bites” are – unheard of in Australia!!!
All you have to do is read the text above the recipe ๐
These are great. We just got a costco not long ago and its on the other side of town so I don’t go there but a lady let me try them at work. I found this recipe. I used coconut oil and a cup of craisins as that is what I had at home. The trick is definitely letting them cool completely.
I really don’t like the taste of coconut. Don’t mind the coconut oil. Can I leave out the coconut or will it make a big difference in the texture and whether they stay together.
I think you should be good.
I MAKE THIS RECIPE ALL THE TIME. TRY ANY GROUND NUTS IN PLACE OF COCONUT. IE. WALNUTS, PECANS, ALMONDS. ANY OF THESE COMBINATIONS HAVE WORKED FOR ME.
My neighbor gave me a few Aussie Bites from Costco, and I really liked them so I decided to look up a recipe to try. I used coconut oil instead of the Canola oil for health reasons and I like them even better than the ones from Costco! Also, I had bought salted sunflower seeds by mistake, but they turned out great. What’s crazy is my 2 year old grandson loves them!! Give him an apple, some cheese, and a couple Aussie bites and he’s a happy boy!
My husband is addicted to Aussie Bites, so I was excited to try out this recipe. I accidentally left out the sugar the first time I made them, and we didn’t miss it at all! I’ve also substituted half of the fat for pumpkin puree, and they are still delicious. Removing the quarter cup of sugar and splitting the fat in half makes these 77 calories each and still just as tasty and satisfying ๐ Thanks so much for the great recipe to build off of.
Hello,
Can I use (ready ) oat flour, rather than pulverizing regular oats into flour? If yes.. how much flour? Thank you.
Yes you can. Use 1 cup of oat flour.
I just tried these at Costco and I’m addicted! Thank you for your recipe and for making a video to go along with it! I can’t wait to try this recipe!
Costco has flax seed in the health care section near the pharmacy. They moved it awhile ago. I had to ask. It’s $8.79 in Canada.
Also wondering if anyone has substituted something for the sugar?
I have completely left out the sugar (keeping the honey) and had them still turn out great!
I used Swerve (erythritol) and they turned out great!
Monk Fruit (sugar) available at Costco go figure
This recipe is fabulous! I’m a nursing mama & always looking for snacks to boost my supply. I added 2 tablespoons of brewers yeast powder to the mixture. The oats, chia, flax & apricots give a good boost already! I replaced all oils with coconut oil & they set up nicely. Thank you for creating this yummy recipe!!
