If you love the flavors of Chicken Cordon Bleu but donโt have time for all that rolling and breading, this casserole is going to be your new best friend. Itโs got all the goodness of the classic dishโsavory ham, juicy chicken, and melty Swiss cheeseโall smothered in a creamy sauce with pasta, of course. You can get it on the table with minimal effort, especially if youโve got some leftover chicken and ham hanging out in the fridge.
You can always make the classic version of Chicken Cordon Bleu, baked or fried.
Why Our Recipe
- All the flavors of traditional Chicken Cordon Bleu in a casserole thatโs perfect for weeknights.
- Packed with Swiss cheese and a creamy sauce for comfort food goodness.
- Use leftover chicken and ham to whip up this dish with minimal prep work and cleanup.
This recipe is perfect for those busy nights when you want comfort food without spending hours in the kitchen. The penne pasta soaks up all that creamy, cheesy goodness, while the garlicky panko topping adds that tasty little casserole crunch. Itโs the kind of dish thatโll have everyone coming back for seconds, and youโll love how easy it is to pull together.
Ingredient Notes
- Penne: This recipe calls for penne, but you can substitute with other short pasta like rotini, shells, or ziti. Cook it just until al dente, as it will continue to cook slightly in the oven.
- Swiss cheese: For the best flavor, use a good-quality Swiss cheese. If Swiss cheese isn’t your favorite, Gruyere is a great substitute.
- Cooked chicken: Rotisserie chicken works great in this recipe or use leftovers. If youโre using raw chicken, cook it thoroughly before adding it to the casserole.
- Ham: Leftover ham is perfect for this recipe or you can buy diced or chopped ham in packages, usually near the bacon.
- Dijon mustard: If you’re out of Dijon, yellow mustard or whole-grain mustard can be used in a pinch.
- Apple cider vinegar: White wine vinegar or lemon juice can be used as a substitute if necessary.
Sneak in a Veggie
Looking to sneak in a vegetable? One of the best veggies to include is steamed broccoli. You can either mix the broccoli right into the casserole or layer it under the chicken and ham for a hidden surprise that even picky eaters might enjoy. Other great options include sautรฉed spinach or lightly steamed asparagus. If you’re worried about kids noticing the veggies, chop them finely and mix them in with the sauce; they’ll blend right in!
Storage & Reheating Instructions
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
To reheat, place a portion in a microwave-safe dish and microwave in 30-second increments on high, stirring between, until heated through.
For a crispier topping, reheat in a 350ยฐF oven for 15 minutes.

Absolutely LOVE the Stay at Home Chef. I come to this website all the time for recipe inspo and I am never disappointed! My husband and I have been on a casserole kick lately and this casserole was amazing. Delicious, full of flavor, easy to make. It will be added to our dinner rotation. I had to substitute a few ingredients but oh my goshโฆ Sooooo good!!!! Thank you Rachel, Caytlin & team for all your hard work and delicious meals.
I ate this at a church potluck. Wished I could have gone back for more. Delicious. Luckily, it was made by a dear friend and she shared the recipe. Plan to make for my family.

We absolutely loved it. Made it just as the recipe states. Love the garlic panko topping too.
I know this doesnโt freeze well but can you make it ahead and leave in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook?
Yes you could. Just note that the pasta may become soggy from sitting in liquids and absorbing them.
If you want to freeze the casserole, couldnโt you cook the pasta until it is not quite done then add everything else. Wouldnโt that solve the possibility of โsoggyโ pasta?
That is a great suggestion!
Havenโt made it yet but will when the gang comes for Christmas. I am wondering why you put apple cider vinegar in it
Gail
The little bit of apple cider vinegar adds a subtle tang to the dish and really helps to balance out the creaminess. It is a unique addition but trust me, it is so good!
I made this for a big family dinner tonight for a celebration and it was a huge hit!!! Everyone said it was delicious and there were 8 of us which it easily fed. I will definitely make this again. โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
Iโm vegetarian so took out meats and put in onions, carrots, green peas and drained white beans (optional), to stir in and cook where meat would go and used veggie broth โฆ.:::: was pretty darn good.
Thank you ladies. This chicken will be on my table for family & guests. You may have hit it out of the park.
