Why Our Recipe
- A little flour thickens the batter so it clings to every slice for the perfect coating.
- Air frying gives a crispy outside while keeping the inside soft and custardy.
- Ready in under 10 minutes per batch, no standing over the stove!
This recipe is great for busy mornings or when you donโt want to deal with a griddle. It cooks up fast and evenly in the air fryer, and you still get that sweet cinnamon goodness in every bite. Whether youโre making breakfast for the family or just treating yourself, this oneโs a winner.
Ingredient Notes
- Milk: Whole milk gives the richest custard, but 2%, 1%, or any milk alternative works.
- Large Eggs: Four large eggs will give you the perfect custard base.
- Brown Sugar: Light or dark brown sugar both work. Dark brown sugar adds a deeper flavor.
- All-Purpose Flour: Thickens the custard so it coats the bread evenly and gives a little extra crisp crust.
- Ground Cinnamon: Brings that classic sweet cinnamon flavor.
- Vanilla Extract: Adds warmth and depth to the batter.
- Salt: Just a pinch balances the sweetness.
- French Bread, Challah, Brioche, or Texas Toast: Use 1-inch thick slices for the best texture.
Bread Options
You can use any kind of sliced bread to make this recipe. A good thick slice that is 1-inch thick is best for an optimal custardy interior to crusty exterior ratio.
Challah is a stand-out favorite. Other great options include Texas toast with those thick-cut slices. Brioche is another classic option for that extra soft sweetness.
For something chewier, go with a French bread or sourdough. For some sweeter twists, use a cinnamon swirl bread, cinnamon bread, banana bread, or go wild with croissants for an ultra-buttery version.
Why add flour?
Flour is the secret to getting that perfect French toast coating. It thickens the custard so it sticks to the bread instead of dripping off. That means every slice cooks up with a beautiful, crisp crust and a soft, custardy inside. Without it, the batter can be too thin, leading to soggy or uneven results.
Avoiding Lumps
Flour can be a little tricky to whisk in smoothly. Honestly, it just takes some good strong whisking, so donโt be shy about giving it a solid stir.
Sprinkle the flour in slowly or sift it to avoid clumps. For an ultra-smooth batter without the effort, blend everything together in a blender.
Storage & Reheating Instructions
Store leftovers in an airtight container or plastic bag in the fridge for up to 4 to 5 days.
Reheat in the air fryer at 350โ for 2 to 3 minutes or in the microwave in 30-second intervals until warmed through.
How can this only be 54 mg of sodium per piece? Eggs have 70 mg per egg, bread is usually at least 100 per piece, depending on the milk it ranges from 50-55 per 1/2 a cup.
