My mom gave me a Yonanas machine for my birthday a number of years ago. I was a bit skeptical. I eat bananas, but I don’t like banana flavored anything, especially ice cream. Well, let me tell you what my friends, bananas can make one heck of a faux ice cream. And wait for it….it’s even healthy!
Mixing in a little peanut butter and cocoa powder is my favorite, but I’ve included several other flavor combinations for you to try. It’s the consistency of frozen yogurt, without any of the dairy. Awesome, huh? You really can have your ice cream and eat it too! I’ve been doing this for several years now and people are always asking for the recipe. I’ve even served it to kids and they had NO idea!
PRO TIP: This recipe works best with bananas that have ripened to the point where they have little black spots appearing. Bananas have various stages or ripeness and become sweeter as they progress, with a less pronounced banana flavor.
Watch the video below where I walk you through every step of the recipe. I love including videos with every post for those who are visual learners. You can see my entire collection of video recipes HERE.
Could the bananas be replaced with frozen mangoes? Am putting my bananas in the freezer now but would love to try with mangoes. Or does this recipe need the starch in the bananas?
Yes, but I wouldn’t add peanut butter or chocolate to mangoes.
Can this be frozen after it’s made?
Yes it can!
Hi. Can I mix in avocado? Any specific amount?
Worth a try!
I used a nutella instead of a peanut butter and it was awesome….
I can’t wait to try this out with my kids!? sounds great!
Just a question- when i did it, it came out more like a smoothie than ice cream. Do you think my Bananas werent frozen enough?
Sounds like they weren’t!
But how do you make this in a yonanas machine? How are you supposed to mix the other ingredients in? I’ve tried and it never seemed to work that well. Maybe this is only for a food processor??
You process the bananas through the yonananas machine and then mix it with the other ingredients.
This is better than empty calories in highly sweetened whipped ice cream, but all the recipes given here are high in calories – bananas are the highest calorie fruit, peanut butter and cocoa powder aren’t great either. This isn’t a diet ice cream, that’s for sure. I wouldn’t even describe this as healthy without the qualifier that it’s healthier when compared to some commercial ice creams…
Depends on how you define healthy. I am of the opinion that healthy has nothing to do with calories. Depending on what you add to it, you may end up with significant nutritional value since bananas are quite high in nutrients. Limiting calories can lead to starvation. Basing choices on nutritional value seems more like a healthy choice.
I couldn’t have said it better myself. And I’m so glad you did. Eat for good health, healthy food choices with nutritiion.
I agree with Rachel. Calories and fat does not mean unhealthy. We need those things, and too little of them will have negative ramifications, even if you are dieting. The natural sugar from bananas is going to be a lot healthier than added cane sugar, and the fat and protein from nut butter is phenomenal. Plus all the additional nutrients you get from those things.Last time I checked, both bananas and peanut butter were on my list of approved “diet” foods. And for people who need to cut out dairy for whatever reason, this is an awesome alternative when you want a sweet treat. And even dieters still need to have treats. Just don’t make it a meal replacement serving size.
And if youโre on Weight Watchers this is a perfect healthy treat with zero points ! Thank you for sharing.
It would have 1 point if you added the Peannut butter powder. And more if using coconut oil, but if only using fruit then yeah, 1 point
Do i have tofreeze it or is it ready after it is mixec
It’s ready immediately.
I try it today for the first time and I love it I needed something dairy free since I can’t have dairy products it is very tasty
