Ingredient Notes

  • Rice Krispies Cereal: Any crispy rice cereal will work for this recipe including store brands or gluten-free versions.
  • Butter: Salted or unsalted butter will work here. If you only have unsalted, you may want to add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.
  • Mini Marshmallows: Using mini marshmallows ensures they melt evenly and quickly. If you only have large marshmallows, use about 40 to equal the 4 cups needed, and cut them into smaller pieces for easier melting.
  • Candy Melts: These can be found in the baking aisle or craft stores and are sold in a variety of colors. If you can’t find candy melts, white chocolate chips can be used in the same amount.
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips: These add the perfect contrast for spider webs or ghost faces. You can swap them for milk or dark chocolate chips if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Halloween Sprinkles: Go wild with your choices here! Halloween-themed sprinkles will add a festive touch, but any colored sprinkles will work.
  • Candy Eyes: Typically found near the sprinkles in the baking aisle or in craft stores, these give the mummies and ghosts their signature look.
  • Liquid Food Coloring: Choose purple, orange, or black to give your treats a spooky vibe.

Decorating Ideas

Mummy Treats: Use white candy melts to drizzle over the treats in a crisscross pattern and place two candy eyes for the mummy’s face.

Ghost Faces: Melt white chocolate and spread over the square treat. Use chocolate chips to make eyes and a mouth.

Spiderwebs: Melt dark or milk chocolate and drizzle in a spiral pattern, then use a toothpick to drag lines from the center outward, creating a web effect.

Storage Instructions

At Room Temperature: Store your Rice Krispie Treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Make sure the container is sealed tightly to keep them fresh and chewy.

Freezing: For longer storage, freeze the treats. Cut them into squares and place them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Freeze until solid, then transfer the squares to a resealable plastic freezer bag. Store frozen for up to 3 months. To enjoy, let them thaw at room temperature for about 15-20 minutes.
