Pudding from scratch is so much more delicious than the boxed version! Featuring homemade vanilla pudding, vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, and fresh whipped cream, our banana pudding recipe is the ultimate comfort dessert.
In a medium saucepan, melt 5 tablespoons salted butter over low heat. Once completely melted, add in 3 tablespoons cornstarch and whisk until well combined. Let cook 1 minute.
Whisk in 4 cups heavy cream and 1/4 cup granulated sugar. Stir continually while slowly increasing the heat to medium-high. When the cream thickens and starts to simmer, immediately remove the pan from the heat. Stir in 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract until completely melted.
Cover and place in refrigerator for 30-60 minutes, or until completely cool.
Homemade Whipped Cream
Place a large mixing bowl (preferably metal or glass) in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before whipping.
Use the chilled bowl and a hand mixer to whip 3 cups heavy cream with 1/3 cup powdered sugar and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
Assembly
Once the pudding is cooled, layer the bottom of a 9x9 baking dish or trifle dish with Nilla wafers. Top with half of the banana slices, then half of the vanilla pudding. Repeat with another layer of wafers, bananas, and the remaining pudding.
Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Just before serving, top with the whipped cream and sprinkle with additional cookie crumbles, if desired.
