8slicesProvolone cheeseor American cheese or cheese whiz
Instructions
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add in 2 pounds ground beef and season with 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, and 1 teaspoon garlic powder. Cook, breaking the beef into small pieces, until it starts to brown, about 7–9 minutes.
Push the cooked ground beef to the edges of the pan. Add 4 tablespoons salted butter to the center of the skillet, followed by the sliced onion and bell pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion and pepper are softened and slightly browned, about 5–6 minutes.
Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cube 8 ounces cream cheese and add to the skillet. Fold the cream cheese into the beef mixture until fully melted and incorporated, creating a creamy sauce.
Turn off the heat. Spoon the beef mixture onto the buns, about 1/2 cup per sandwich, and top each with a slice of Provolone cheese. Serve immediately.
For best results, toast the buns before assembling.
Notes
Optional Add-Ins and Toppings: Sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeño slices, hot cherry peppers, long hot peppers, sweet peppers, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, mustard, or hot sauce.
For toasted buns, slice the buns in half and place them cut-side down in a dry skillet over medium heat. Cook for 1–2 minutes, or until golden brown. Or toast them under a broiler, cut-side up, for 1–2 minutes, keeping a close eye to prevent burning.
If preferred, dice the onion and bell pepper into small pieces instead of slicing them. Cook as directed, and make sure they soften.
