In a large mixing bowl, whisk together milk, cream, and eggs.
Add brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt to the bowl. Continue to whisk until the mixture is smooth.
Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium-high heat.
Dip bread slices in the egg mixture, making sure each slice is fully saturated. Cook each slice on the heated griddle or pan until golden brown, which should take about 3-4 minutes per side.
Brûlée each slice of toast using your preferred method. Serve with your favorite toppings such as berries, whipped cream, or maple syrup.
To Brûlée
Torch Method: Sprinkle a thin layer of white sugar on top of each toast slice. Using a torch, caramelize the sugar until it turns golden brown.
Broil Method: Sprinkle a thin layer of white sugar on top of each toast slice. Using your oven's broiler, caramelize the sugar until it turns golden. Monitor the toast closely to prevent burning.
Pan Method: After cooking the French toast, remove it from the pan. Sprinkle roughly 1 tablespoon sugar on the pan, roughly the same surface size as the toast. Place the toast onto the sugar and let it caramelize for about 2 minutes. Repeat on the other side, if desired.
Notes
To Freeze: Let the French toast cool completely on a wire rack before transferring to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. You can stack the French toast with a sheet of parchment paper in between each layer. Freeze until solid, then transfer to a resealable plastic freezer bag for long-term storage. To Reheat: Microwave on high for about 1 minute per slice until warmed through or toast in a toaster until heated through for a crispy exterior. Remember to brûlée the top again after it's reheated to regain that delightful crunch.
