Ingredients

BASIC APPLESAUCE

  • 5 pounds apples combination of McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji, and Jonathan
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 3-inch cinnamon stick

OPTIONAL ADD INS

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

BASIC APPLESAUCE

  • Peel, core, and slice apples into small chunks. Transfer to a large saucepan or pot.
  • Add in water, lemon juice, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil over high heat and then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let simmer 20-30 minutes until apples are soft.
  • Puree using a blender, food processor, or immersion blender for a smoother applesauce.

OPTIONAL ADD INS

  • For sweetened applesauce, return pureed applesauce to pan. Stir in brown sugar and continue to cook, uncovered, until the applesauce thickens, about 10 minutes.
  • For a more flavorful, dessert type applesauce, stir in butter, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract until butter is melted.

SERVING AND STORAGE

  • Serve warm or cold, or freeze or can using proper canning procedures for later use. Applesauce will stay good refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
